human society entering the new era, knowledge based economy has come out to distinguish
itself in the world. On account of today’s People-Oriented connotation along with
utmost attention to personal value and in pursuit of harmonious and coordinated
development between mankind and the nature, there emerges a tendency of the day
in terms of growing love and care for life and attention to livelihood. Encountered
with the aging society, people enjoy an increasing preference for a higher living
quality and better medical healthcare, which has evoked a new wave of TCM research
and development (R&D) all over the world.
TCM has been playing a significant role throughout the age of Chinese nation’s origination
and flourish, living and procreation. TCM theory has developed into an important
part in Chinese philosophy. Thousands years of clinical practice has come to a clear
conclusion in the medicinal application of numerous animals, plants and mineral
substances. More than one hundred thousand formulae and remedies have been categorized
into different documentations, besides uncountable scattered ones among the people.
All of these have become a common wealth belonging to the whole human race.
Compared with modern drugs, TCM is unique in quite many aspects, e.g. TCM plays
a role more like a biological response modifier than a single target attacker. There
exist considerable differences between discovery method of TCM and a modern drug,
which starts with molecular design, follows by animal test, and ends up with clinical
trial. TCM itself is based on the accumulation of clinical practice, but the basic
principle of TCM is recognizing the uniqueness of each human being and developing
a personalized medication to obtain optimal results. New strategy and opportunity
of TCM R&D have been created by water-soluble active components in TCM decoction.
Inevitably, TCM modernization takes time. Issues in “know what (active ingredients)”,
“know why (mechanism)” and quality control (stability and consistency) are yet to
be solved. As a result, utmost assimilation of modern science and technology, especially
the theories and methods in life science, is the way to TCM modernization and internationalization,
which will become a hot spot in new economy. Unique pattern and great potential
in the TCM R&D have been proved by Chinese scientists’ outstanding contribution
in the research of arteannuin and radix trichosanthin. It is my firm belief that
with unremitting diligence and enduring dedication of us all, the Chinese nation
will positively achieve further success in this field full of opportunities, with
a clear conscience for the age, for our race and for science advancement.
